Clam Digging

If you have followed the news lately you have noticed that Northern California is having unseasonably wonderful weather, we are running around in tank tops and shorts right now enjoying all of the warmth and sunshine. Actually we are really in the midst of the most rain in either 7 years or since 1997 (the journalist either couldn't count or get his/her years right). Either way it is wet here and Sonoma County and Napa County are totally flooding. So what to do in this weather?

Go Clam Digging!

Ben and I drove up to Bodega Bay on Friday in the midst of heavy rain and wind to collect some clams. We wore rain suits and big rubber boots and long johns.

All this rain was making me nervous

At one point we almost couldn't pass through since the road was flooded. But we did without caring one bit if we were going to be able to return. (Well I actually cared since I was scheduled for an airport run that evening).

Before clamming we ate some chowder in Bodega Bay. At this point I bet Ben $20 that we wouldn't find anything.

Because of the weather conditions and the fact we had to walk over quicksand to get to the flats I left my camera in the car so there are no action shots of the clam retrieval system. Imagine Ben lying the sand while I try to suction up water with a pump next to him. At first it seemed we were doomed and that I would win the bet. But then we met the nicest guy who showed us how to find them and it was actually not that hard.

We got 8 total.

If you want to do this yourself, keep in mind you can only go out there with there is a MINUS tide or you might get stuck out in the middle of the bay which would suck. The next time for this will be in early Spring. You also need a fishing license which are $10.75 for the day and you can only get 10 each. We got about 1-2 lbs of delicious clam meat from just 8 clams.
